Forgive the quick posts–these things are coming fast and furious. If you’re a comics fan in Brisbane, boy have we got the Facebook event invite for you!
All right, it’s on, Beantown. Alexa D. says, “I’ll be the Bostonian to get off their ass and organize the RCIP meet-up for our fair and literate city.”
Instructions are as follows,
The meet-up will be on Boston Common at the Parkman Bandstand, starting at 2pm going till whenever you have to leave. I don’t know for sure if there’s anything else going on at the bandstand, but on the off-chance there is, the back-up meet-up spot is the Frog Pond.
This one’s not linked to a shop or a library or anything, just a group of fans, though members of the local comics creators collective, Boston Comics Roundtable are expected to attend.? Bring snacks and comics to share!
You heard the lady. Bring snacks! Probably not a cream pie–you guys are sick of those, right?
What’s the matter, is your love of sequential art not reason enough to read comics in public? Okay, twist our arms. Here’s another contest, this time brought to you by the lovely folks at Top Shelf Comics, who are offering up such terrific titles as Hey Princess, 120 Days, Undeleted Scenes, and Moving Pictures.
Entering is simple: Send an image of you reading comics in public to the address readcomicsinpublic@gmail.com with the subject line “Top Shelf!” Be creative! Top Shelf will chose the winner or winners and send the book or books along.
Due to shipping, only people with U.S. shipping addresses can apply. Good luck, and don’t forget to check out Top Shelf’s site.
Hey friends, what’s better than a dinosaur? How about a sterling silver dinosaur? Our pal Cristalle, from the wonderful craft blog, “I Like You As a Friend” wants to give the above bronto away to one lucky comics reader.
Want it? Send an image of yourself reading comics in public to our e-mail address (readcomicsinpublic@gmail.com) with the subject line: Dinosaur! (Exclamation mark is a must.) Be creative, and Cristalle will pick one luck winner. Dinosaur-themed photos are encouraged.
Due to shipping, we’re limiting entries to comics fans in the U.S. Good luck, and don’t forget to check out Cristalle’s site for crafty goodness.
Read Comics in Public Day is all about bringing people together — which is why we get so excited when we’re interviewed by sites like Polish comics blog Aleja Komiksu. I don’t speak Polish, so I had to let Google Translate do the trick.
Check out such insightful quotes from me as, “First, this is not so bie my series. All this action has to be fun, which gives people the opportunity to go home with the comic. Perhaps thanks to succeed even meet someone with similar interests?”
Pretty good, right?
I only heard about this an hour ago, but it’s already my favorite site on the Internet. Take that, Wikipedia.org! Hot Nerds Reading Comics is a celebration of oft-bespectacled brainy folk reading comics. All right, most of these nerdy folk are reading comics in the privacy of their own homes.
We’re hoping they’ll brave the sunlight for a few hours this Saturday. Bring your parasols, we don’t mind.
Are you a lady? Do you like comics and having your image posted on blogs featuring images of Wonder Woman beating the crap out of people? Boy does DC Comics Women Kicking Ass have the Read Comics in Public Day tie-in for you.
The site is asking female comics fans to send in image of themselves doing you-know-what for a new Tumblr site titled “Women Read Comics in Public.” So go to it?but like we said below, send ‘em along to us, as well!
Okay, that appears to be an office cubicle, but I suppose that counts, too. Baby steps, friends, baby steps.
Whitney Matheson of the Lost-watching, new wave-listening, Sea Monkey-raising USA Today blog Pop Candy posted this shot. The top part definitely appears to be Matheson, though we can’t really vouch for anything below the eyeline.
Matheson wants her readers to send in shots of themselves doing what the holiday instructors. Do it! But don’t forget to CC us!
Thanks Whitney!
Oh, NPR, we love you too. Here’s a shot from the NPR front page — there used to be a story about Matisse, but heck, we’ll settle for The NPR Summer Reading List. And maybe a tote signed by Terry Gross. You guys can set that up, right?
Here’s our writeup on the Monkey See blog — so nutty it would make Ira Flatow blush. Thanks Glen!
Hey, it’s a meetup in my own city. And guess what, I’ll be there! We’re meeting up at 1PM on Saturday, in front of the George Washington statue — for reference, here is a shot of me drinking a beer in Minneapolis over the weekend (note that I’m way handsomer — and in-color — in real life).
Our friends at Forbidden Planet will be on-hand to pass out free bags of comics to a limited number of attendees. Also, if that’s not good enough (greedy), they’ve also agreed to offer a discount on books to anyone who utters a secret code during a certain window on the 28th. How’s that for comic booky skull duggery.
If you plan to come and would like the code, drop me a line at readcomicsinpublic@gmail.com.
The event will be 1-2, weather permitting, though you’re welcome to stay longer, of course. It’s a public park, for god’s sake.
